What you'll find out

Your leadership style

One of nine styles, from Captain to Catalyst, based on four trade-offs every leader makes. Close calls and profiles between styles are named honestly.

Your strongest practices

How often you actually show seven effective behaviors, such as clarity, trust and presence, and which two deserve your attention next.

How well you adapt

Eight realistic situations test whether you instruct, guide, involve or entrust when each one fits, not just what you prefer.

How your team may see you

What your team gets from your style, what they may miss, and three concrete next steps for the coming month.

How it works

  1. Part 1

    Style preferences

    24 questions

Pairs of statements, both describing effective leaders. You tap the side that fits you better, so there is no obviously “right” answer.

  2. Part 2

    Leadership practices

    32 questions

How often you did specific things in the last three months. Real behavior, not intentions, so the result is harder to game.

  3. Part 3

    Leadership situations

    8 questions

Short scenarios, from a new hire with a key report to a Friday outage. You pick what you would actually do.

Built on decades of leadership research

The assessment draws on well-established, non-proprietary research: task versus relationship behavior, participative decision-making, change orientation, delegation, and adapting your approach to the readiness of people and the demands of the situation.

It measures three layers separately: how you prefer to lead, how often you show effective behaviors, and whether you adapt. That is why a balanced profile alone doesn’t earn the Navigator label; you also have to adapt in practice.

Four built-in candor questions flag answers that are likely too favorable, and every question is original.

This is a leadership style profile for self-reflection and development, not a validated psychometric test. Don't use it for hiring, promotion or other employment decisions.

Questions and answers

How long does the leadership style assessment take?

About 13 to 15 minutes for 64 questions. Your progress is saved in your browser after every answer, so you can pause and come back.

Is the leadership style test really free?

Yes. You see your style and executive summary without signing up. The detailed report is free too; it only needs a free PeakTeams account so you can keep it.

What are the nine leadership styles?

Captain, Systems Builder, Trailblazer, Visionary, Coach, Bridge-Builder, Anchor, Catalyst and Navigator. When your preferences are balanced but you don’t adapt consistently, the report says so and calls the result Blend.

What is situational adaptability?

Whether you change your approach to fit the situation: instructing a beginner under time pressure, entrusting an expert, involving a team in a decision it will live with. Choosing the same approach every time scores low, whichever approach it is.

What happens to my answers?

While you take the test, your answers stay in your browser. They are only stored on our servers if you create an account and keep your result, and you can delete it at any time.

Can I use it with my leadership team?

Yes. Each leader takes it individually. To see how your team actually works together, combine it with the free PeakTeams team assessment.
